Indonesia Wins SEA Games Football After 32 Years

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia -- The U-22 Indonesian national team has quenched its thirst for a title for more than three decades after defeating Thailand in the 2023 SEA Games final at the Olympic Stadium, Phnom Penh, Tuesday (16/5) evening.

The fierce duel between Garuda's junior squad and War Elephant was tough. Indonesia had won 2-0 first through Ramadhan Sananta's brace in the first half.

Thailand then scored a goal back in the second half through Anan Yodsangwal and a goal in stoppage time by Yotsakon Burapha.

During extra time, Indonesia then scored three goals from different players namely Irfan Jauhari, Fajar Fathur Rahman and Beckham Putra Nugraha.

The success of becoming the SEA Games champion in the era of Rizky Ridho and friends was Indonesia's success for the third time in the sport of football at the Southeast Asian Games.

The first success was achieved at the 1987 SEA Games. The gold medal in football was released two years ago. It was only at the 1991 SEA Games that the Indonesian national team again won the highest achievement.

After the success achieved by players such as Robby Darwis, Rochy Putiray, and Widodo Cahyono Putro, Indonesia has never won the SEA Games as a soccer champion.

Four opportunities to win gold failed to materialize, namely when Indonesia entered the final in 1997, 2011, 2013 and 2019.

Indonesia has had to wait 32 years to be able to feel again on the highest podium at the 2023 SEA Games.

Collecting three titles at the SEA Games, Indonesia is now equaling Vietnam's record, which previously won the SEA Games title three times.

Thailand is the ruler of the SEA Games with 16 titles, followed by Malaysia with six titles, and Myanmar with five titles.
